No one
can resist the charms of a puppy. In photographer William Wegman's wordless
ode to young Weimaraners, kids will see puppies in baskets, in planters,
on the rocks, in the air, on blocks, and even in the doghouse. Babies
love to look at faces (even the baby blues of other species) and Wegman's
adorable, high-contrast photos are easy on the youngest of eyes.

In Good
Showing, the companion volume to Good Judgement. International judge Peggy
Grayson turns her attention to showing dogs. Writing in the same readable,
no nonsense style, she details the potential joys and frustrations awaiting
anyone setting foot in the ring as an exhibitor. Drawing on many years
experience of both showing and judging, she gives advice on such topics
as how to enter shows, presentation (of exhibitor as well as exhibit),
ring etiquette and coping with problems in the ring. Illustrated throughout
with colour photographs and humourous but informative line drawings. Good
Showing is a must for any exhibitor.

This is
not a book about dog training. In a nutshell, it explores the development
of the special relationship between humans and dogs which began 10,000
years ago when both early man and wolves lived in "packs" and formed a
firm relationship for their mutual survival. This bond became so strong
that, whatever changes occurred in the circumstances of man, his canine
companion remained a part of his life. Desmond Morris uses a question
and answer technique (Why do dogs bark? Why does a dog wag its tail? Why
is a sausage-in-a-roll called a Hot Dog?) to explain what makes a dog
tick - the use of body language in their relationships with other dogs
and with humans. He also clears up some misconceptions and half-truths
(Does a beaten dog offer its throat to an attacker? Do dogs show remorse?)

This is the first book on the Weimaraner to have been published in Britain. The breed standard was laid down in 1896 (at Bernberg, in East Germany), relatively late for a dog which, records show, had been with us in shape, size and colour for several centuries before that. While the fancied descent from St Hubert's hounds is perhaps not to be taken seriously, there is no doubt that the German and French nobility were hunting with dogs very similar to Weimaraners as early as the 16th century. Gillian Burgoin outlines the various theories relating to the Weimaraner's early history, then covers what she calls its 'new' history, which began around 1870 and was confirmed by the birth of the first pure-bred litter in 1881 and the special award to the Weimaraner in 1883 at Treptow, where it was defined as a 'heavy pointer with good musculature, a fine silver grey coat, and of great elegance'. From there, she goes on to consider the fortunes of the breed in Britain, covering the breed standard, the effect of imports from other countries, the Weimaraner's performance at field and working trials and the regulations governing these events, and giving a full account of Kennel Club championships and the show bench, with lists of champions in the various categories. Finally, there are observations on the progress of the breed in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and Latin America. |
